Let Fruit Get the Conversation Started

“How was your day?”       “Fine.”

“What did you do at school?”       “Nothing.”

Sound familiar?

Getting kids to open up at the dinner table can sometimes feel harder than getting dinner on the table in the first place.

This Family Meals Month, try serving up something different: a better question, with a side of fruit.

Pick a Fruit, Pick a Question

Put a bowl of colorful fruit in the center of the table and tag each fruit with a question. Everyone picks a piece, then answers the corresponding prompt.

No complicated game. No prep. Just fruit, family and a chance to learn something you might not have discovered by asking something different than, “How was your day?”

🍌 BANANA: GO BANANAS

What made you laugh today?

🍍 PINEAPPLE: SWEET STUFF

What was the sweetest part of your day?

🍓 STRAWBERRY: BERRY PROUD

What's something you did today that made you proud?

🫐 BLUEBERRIES: SOMETHING BLUE-TIFUL

What's something new you learned or discovered?

🍊 ORANGE: LOOK AHEAD

What's one thing you're excited about tomorrow?

🥭 MANGO: DREAM BIG

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

🍇 GRAPES: PASS IT ON

Say something you appreciate about someone at the table.

The questions don't have to stop there. Let kids invent their own fruit prompts, too. The sillier, the better.

A Little More Time Around the Table

Family meals don't have to be elaborate or picture-perfect to be worthwhile. Research continues to find connections between eating together and positive dietary and family outcomes.

A 2023 review found that more frequent family meals were associated with better dietary and psychosocial outcomes among children and adolescents.

And there may be a benefit to lingering together a little longer. In a randomized clinical trial, children ages 6 to 11 ate significantly more fruits and vegetables when family mealtime was extended by about 10 minutes compared with their family's usual mealtime.

So tonight, keep it simple. Put some fruit on the table, put the phones away and get chatting.  You might be surprised by what gets served up.
