Evening snacks
Going to bed with a rumbling tummy? Not a good idea! Even if you have eaten your evening meal, you can still snack with a clear conscience, sleep well and get the following day off to a good start. We tell you how!
In order not to overload your body unnecessarily, stick to light evening snacks that will not drive up your blood sugar level and will help your body to regenerate. It’s best to avoid high-fat and sugary foods and instead opt for protein-rich foods and complex carbohydrates. These will make you feel full, happy and tired – the perfect conditions for a refreshing sleep.
The following are good evening snacks:
Nuts and seeds
Unsalted nuts will give you plenty of protein, making you feel full. Potassium and magnesium will help you to relax. Cashew nuts and peanuts in particular contain a lot of tryptophan, which releases the endorphin serotonin and the sleep hormone melatonin. But be careful: nuts also contain a lot of (good) fat, so a handful is plenty as an evening snack.
Cottage cheese
You don’t need to think twice about snacking on cottage cheese in the evening. Compared to other dairy products, it is particularly high in protein and is low in carbohydrates and fat. This makes it a light snack that doesn’t overload the body.
Berries
Feel like a fruity snack in the evening? Stay away from citrus fruits and other foods containing fruit acid as these can stimulate the circulation. Opt for berries instead. These small, colourful fruits make particularly good snacks and will provide you with plenty of vitamins, fibre and phytochemicals, which can protect your body’s cells while you sleep.
Vegetable sticks and dips
Handy: Baby carrots are an ideal snack and contain valuable fibre and complex carbohydrates. Cucumber sticks or sticks of celery consist mainly of water and are a particularly light snack to nibble on. For an extra protein boost, dip your vegetable sticks in hummus, nut butter or cottage cheese – hey presto, you have a healthy snack to eat while watching TV.
Snacking in the evening can be healthy and delicious!
