Superfood: our everyday favourites
Superfoods like goji berries, chia seeds or quinoa are sometimes hard to get. Don’t worry! There are some everyday foods like bananas, broccoli or blackberries which are not only healthy but also easy to get. Check out our everyday superfood list.
Superfoods contain mentionable doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals that are good for us if we eat them on a regularly basis. There is a huge trend for matcha, açai berries, spirulina and other exotic foods. We love those superfoods as they offer a great variety in our diet. Still, it is worth to have a closer look on some of our everyday foods because they are healthy as well.
Blueberries
The dark blue colour of blueberries (and also blackberries or blackcurrants) comes from a plant compound called anthocyanin, which is known for its antioxidant effect: it reduces cellular damage and can prevent inflammatory diseases in the body as well as skin aging. Blueberries are also an excellent source of vitamins C and K. Potassium and manganese may help the regulation of blood pressure and can strengthen your bones.
Broccoli
Green vegetables like broccoli, spinach or kale are especially rich in chlorophyll, which can help the body to detoxify. Broccoli also contains secondary plant compounds which have an anti-inflammatory effect. Additional health benefits come from flavonol glycosides and many vitamins, calcium and iron.
Flax seeds
Flax seeds contain a lot of fibre, omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium, which boost your energy. The fibre helps with digestion, and there’s also some evidence that flax seeds can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Try them in mueslis or smoothies!
Sorghum
Sorghum is a gluten-free grain that is a great alternative to rice or noodles. It is rich in iron, protein, and dietary fibre. It’s silicic acid and silicon can help against fatigue and may have a positive effect on hair, nails and skin.
Walnuts
Walnuts have the highest antioxidant activity of all nuts. They are also rich in polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 oils as well vitamin E, which is excellent for heart health, may prevent high blood pressure, diabetes and depressions.
Bananas
Bananas deliver the energy needed before a long workout. They are one of the best sources of potassium, which can protect against the hardening of the arteries and prevent strokes. Bananas also contain high amounts of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps boost serotonin production, which can lead to better moods and a better night sleep.
