And now you can eat it for breakfast

If pecan pie feels like a flavor reserved for special occasions, we have exciting news. We've collaborated with the chefs at Homemade Cooking to craft a recipe that captures the classic profile—a buttery crust embracing a sweet, nutty, gooey center. The difference? Our version transforms the traditional sugar-and-butter bomb into a treat with more fiber, healthy fats and a simple ingredient list that you can feel good about.

Building a Better Bar:  The Healthy Swaps

Putting Whole Grains to Work

Instead of a standard crust made with white flour and butter, this recipe uses a blend of old-fashioned oats and whole wheat flour.  It’s bound with a little applesauce and olive oil and just a touch of sweetener too.

Making the move from refined flour to whole grains is a significant upgrade.  Nutrition research consistently shows that swapping refined grains for whole grains supports better metabolic health and is linked with lower risks of heart disease.  The oats in the crust also provide a special type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan, which is known to help lower LDL (lousy) cholesterol.

Choose Plant-Based Oils

Instead of butter, which is a major source of saturated fat, we opted for olive oil.  This swap offers unsaturated fats and aligns with guidelines from the American Heart Association. Consistently making swaps like this is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.  This swap doesn’t make the bars “low fat”, instead it shifts the type of fat towards that which research shows is more protective for your heart.

Letting Fruit Shine

The biggest change is that our gooey filling is a rich banana-based custard made from a combination of ripe bananas and eggs.  Using bananas provides a natural sweetness along with fiber and potassium.  This helps slow digestion compared to the quick rush you get from refined sugar.  High intake of added sugars has been linked to an increased risk of weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

We’re proud to say this version makes significant upgrades when compared to a traditional pecan pie bar. This means you can enjoy a bar as a satisfying snack with your coffee or even as part of breakfast when paired with protein like Greek yogurt.  Let us know if you try it!
