The glowing colours of autumn enchant us once again. Even the rain and the cold will not prevent us from enjoying the fun of this season. And fruit is the secret to getting through this cooler time of the year. We reveal why now, especially, you should eat fruit. Bananas, pineapple and native fruits provide us with powerful vitamins and help to boost our health. Be inspired by our autumn Dole recipes!

What fruit should you eat in autumn?

Many different types of fruit are in season in autumn. These include apples, blackberries, pears, plums, grapes, damsons and quinces. If you are looking for something more exotic in autumn, try bananas or pineapple. Dole fruits are available throughout the year in the supermarket.

Why is fruit so healthy in autumn?

Enjoying fruit in autumn will also benefit your well-being and health. Brightly coloured fruit provides you with plenty of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Like an example? The vitamin C and potassium in apples will boost your defences – perfect for the first waves of colds and flus. Grapes are packed with the plant compound resveratrol, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Grapes also contain potassium and magnesium, both of which promote good muscle and nerve function. Quinces are a good source of potassium, folic acid, vitamin C and zinc. Fruit can also help to alleviate digestive problems.

Another health benefit of eating fruit in autumn is that the fibre in it helps to keep you feeling full for longer as you pursue all your autumnal activities. It makes a perfect snack for autumnal forest walks, when sitting around the campfire, at Laternelaufen (a popular tradition in Germany on St. Martin’s Day when children walk through the streets carrying lanterns), or on cosy afternoons spent playing games and reading.

How can you enjoy fruit in autumn?

Wakey-wakey – your autumn breakfast awaits: It’s often more difficult to get out of bed on the dark mornings. So it’s lovely to be greeted by some sweet or warm treats for breakfast. Look forward to our blueberry and chocolate sandwich, warm wheatgrass and banana porridge with colourful fruit or pineapple and nut muffins. A hot fruit or herbal tea or an aromatic chai latte is the perfect accompaniment.

Out and about in autumn – remember to bring some snacks: If possible, try to get out into the fresh air every day in autumn! Once outside, we get moving and soak up the sun, increasing our vitamin D levels. Pack some of our fruity Dole snacks to boost your energy. Why not try our orange and buckwheat crostata, banana whole grain sandwich with cranberries and figs or our whole grain bagel with bananas, grapes and chocolate hummus.
