Keeping it clean – maintaining an environmentally friendly home
Sustainability is important, but is it something you have considered when it comes to your home? It’s actually child’s play and sometimes even fun! Some simple tips and tricks will help you to cut your water use, avoid chemicals and save energy when doing your laundry, and store food smartly. All of this will make your home more eco-friendly. - Store food sustainably
It’s not difficult at all to create an environmentally friendly home. It starts with the sustainable storage of food. Try to avoid using plastic and aluminium foil. Instead, use glass containers to store pasta, flour, meat, cheese and other foods. Wrap food that has already been opened in reusable beeswax wraps rather than cling film or aluminium foil. Beeswax wraps are a natural alternative for packaging food and keeping it fresh.
- Think of the environment when washing and drying clothes
Keep it clean! You can save energy when doing your laundry. Simply put on a wash only when you have a full load and avoid doing smaller washes in between. Switch to a lower temperature and don’t use the pre-wash. If possible, air dry your clothes instead of putting them in the dryer, as that can also help to save energy.
- Use water economically
Less is more when it comes to water! To run an environmentally friendly household, you need to know the best tips for saving water. Take a shower instead of a bath. Use a flow restrictor in your bathroom and kitchen to reduce the water flow rate. Wash fruit and vegetables in a basin rather than under flowing water. Turn off the water from time to time while you brush your teeth or take a shower. What other tips do you have?
- Make your own cleaning products
No chemicals please! Simply make your own sustainable cleaning products yourself. Mix together organic lemon peel, white vinegar, rosemary or lavender and water to make a bathroom cleaner for example! Banana skins are perfect for dusting indoor plants. If you don’t want to make your own cleaning products yourself, get yourself some basic eco-friendly materials such as gall soap, citric acid, baking soda and white vinegar.
- Rinse your dishes better
How can we be kind to the environment when washing dishes? Only run your dishwasher when it is full and use the economy setting. Scrape off leftover food but don’t rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. To avoid waste, use powder rather than tablets as you can measure it out better. Clean your dishwasher regularly using citric acid and when you are buying a new one, choose an energy-saving model.
