Pineapples and bananas – they’re just so good for us
Pineapples and bananas are probably Dole’s most well-known fruit. Whether curved and yellow or juicy and spiky, both are fabulously exotic, healthy and fresh. But why are these two vitamin boosters so good for us? We reveal all! See also our Dole recipes to find out how you can combine these popular fruit heroes to make some clever and delicious dishes.
Phenomenal pineapple – a sweet and juicy nutritious powerhouse
It goes without saying that Dole pineapple is not to be missed. Did you know that the pineapples that Dole uses are always harvested when they are ripe and sweet and are not left to ripen after they are picked? The tasty tropical treat is a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, as well as a very special enzyme – bromelain. Pineapple is also a particularly rich source of vitamin C. This important vitamin has anti-oxidant benefits and can help to support our immune system. It also promotes the absorption of iron from our food. Tip: Try our Dole “Tropical Gold” pineapple, which is packed with vitamin C.
And don’t forget that the fibre in pineapple will also stimulate your digestive system and keep you feeling full for longer. This aromatic fruit also appeals with important minerals and trace elements, such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc and copper. The presence of bromelain, an enzyme that has anti-inflammatory properties and can help to heal minor injuries, is a highlight. Because it breaks down protein, bromelain also aids digestion.
Fantastic bananas – the fruity choice to boost your energy
There’s no funny business when it comes to the delicious banana. It is one of the most popular tropical fruits in Europe and makes an ideal snack for in between meals. It’s also good in muesli and smoothies and is a handy option for kids or for a quick burst of energy when you are exercising. With us, you can enjoy bananas all through the year – your body will thank you for this healthy treat. This is because bananas contain vitamin B6, which plays a role in the metabolism of proteins and fats. Bananas also contain potassium for well-functioning muscles, nerves, kidneys and heart, and magnesium, which we need for energy metabolism, the activation of several enzymes and functioning muscles and nerves.
And what are the other benefits of bananas? Their high carbohydrate and fructose content means that eating a banana will rapidly boost your energy: perfect when you are playing sport, studying or working. Morning is a good time to eat bananas. They provide plenty of fibre, such as pectin and resistant starch, and will therefore keep you pleasantly full for longer. Eating a banana before going to bed will prevent evening hunger pangs and may even help you to sleep better thanks to the amino acid tryptophan. As you can see, bananas are truly multitalented!
