Today we’re seeing blue – thanks to our favourite snack. Small, delicious and blue (of course!), blueberries are simply a byword for power-packed, fruity refreshment. The secret berry star is in fact considered to be a genuine superfood and truly beneficial for our health. But how healthy is the blueberry really? We found out!

Blueberry fact check – the blue fruit at a glance

This delicious fruit contains only 42 calories per 100 g. Blueberries are also a good source of fibre, aiding digestion and keeping us full for longer. The vitamin C in blueberries acts as an antioxidant, which is important for healthy cells and helps to build connective tissue, bone tissue, cartilage and gums. Beta-carotene in the fruit is a precursor to vitamin A, which is important for good eyesight. Blueberries also contain potassium, a mineral that we need for the normal functioning of cells, nerves and muscles. They are also a good source of folic acid and iron, as well as polyphenols, i.e. tannins and plant pigments. Some of these phytochemicals are believed to strengthen the immune system, prevent inflammation and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, for example.

A handy tip for stomach complaints is to make a tea from dried blueberries. The tannin in the berries is particularly effective.

Blueberries are thus a real nutrient miracle and can rightly be described as a “superfood”.

And why are blueberries blue? Phytochemicals known as anthocyanins are responsible for the blue colour. These chemical compounds are based mainly in the outer layers of a plant, such as the skin, and give flowers and fruit a red, purple or blue colour. These compounds benefit humans due to their antioxidant properties. They also help to protect against UV radiation, attract insects and bind free radicals. Cultivated blueberries are blue on the outside and white inside, so their flesh has a lighter colour.
