Small, green and tasty – you probably know pistachios as a hearty snack (which sometimes aren’t that easy to open). However – drumroll please – these healthy “drupes” (stone fruits) could be making their way into a glass near you! Pistachio milk is THE on-trend drink, which is currently causing a stir, particularly in the US. It means that the familiar grain or nut alternatives to milk – such as oat milk, rice milk or almond milk – now have an exciting competitor. But what does this hip, plant-based drink really have to offer? We have taken a closer look at the pistachio milk trend.

Pistachios have it all

Pistachios are a brilliant snack as they contain lots of valuable polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are important for building cells and regulating cholesterol. They are also a good source of fibre and vitamins, including vitamin B. So they keep us full for longer and act as true “nerve food”. And we mustn’t forget that pistachios contain plenty of protein, which benefits not only athletes. Fans of the little green nut will also be pleased about the polyphenol antioxidants that they contain, as these help to protect cells. So if you want to avoid cow’s milk, pistachio milk will provide you with a nutritious drink that you can enjoy on its own or in muesli, smoothies, coffee, etc. Other great benefits are that the pastel green drink is lactose-, soya- and gluten-free. And because pistachios are bursting with the sleep hormone melatonin, you should definitely try drinking pistachio milk before going to bed. The only disadvantage is that the ready-made variety is currently only available in the US. Until this trend finally reaches our supermarket shelves, however, you can try making it yourself.

Method:

Soak raw, unsalted pistachios overnight in water. Drain and rinse the nuts and purée with approx. 750 ml water to make a velvety drink. If you like, add some salt, or sweeten with dates, maple syrup, vanilla or cinnamon. Filter your homemade pistachio milk through a sieve. Keep refrigerated and consume within a few days.

By the way, combining pistachios with dates will put you in a good mood – the combination of magnesium, vitamin B6 and the amino acid tryptophan is a real mood booster.

Drink it green!
