What can bread do?
All breads are not equal. White flour products, like toast, are not necessarily the best choice. They contain a lot of “empty” calories. Refined white bread provides mainly simple carbohydrates in the form of sugar rather than nutrients. This causes our blood sugar levels to rise sharply, followed by a feeling of being hungry again soon after. It’s better to go for whole grain products. These still contain the outer layers of the grain. Whole grain bread, rolls and the like are therefore a good source of fibre and phytochemicals. They also provide minerals like zinc, iron and magnesium as well as vitamins B1 and B2 and folic acid.
