Savouring autumn sustainably – the five best tips
Autumn is not just the perfect season to appreciate nature in all its colourful splendour, but also an opportunity to reduce our ecological footprint and live sustainably. We’ve got the five best tips for you on how to enjoy the autumn mindfully and in a spirit of respect for nature. By the way, Dole pays attention to natural resources, too, such as to water – but more about that later.
Tip 1: Walk on the sustainable side
We all love environmentally friendly autumn excursions! How about a hike through colourful forests or a relaxing picnic in nature? Yes, this is an option in autumn, too. There’s nothing more beautiful than the light of the last warm sunrays shining between the trees. Take a pass on single-use tableware and packaging, bring along yummy treats in reusable lunchboxes instead – and don’t forget to separate your waste afterwards. This way you can enjoy the autumnal atmosphere to the full while still playing a part in protecting the environment. What snacks to bring along? Well, our Flammkuchen pastries with grapes and pumpkin, the blueberry and cinnamon buns and orange and buckwheat crostata are all pretty tasty!
Tip 2: Rediscovering elderberries
The elderberry befits the season and just about all of it can be put to good use. Syrup, jam, juice, tea or cake are made from the blossoms, bark and fruit. The versatile power fruits can be sustainably savoured without causing food waste. Find your favourite recipe and unleash your creativity. In a few simple steps, you can conjure delectables that are not just super-tasty, but also do without any unnecessary additives. A fruity tea can do the world of good especially in autumn. Simply boil the elderberries in water and then strain them. The tea is served hot or cold and comes with plenty of vitamins in both cases – a true autumn treat!
Tip 3: DIY – crafting with nature
Crafting with natural materials is not just creative, but also environmentally friendly. Go look for colourful leaves, chestnuts, pine cones and branches and let the crafting games begin! You can create autumnal wreaths, decorations for your home or cute figurines from natural materials. Even newbies among the crafting buffs are able to create high-touch pieces of art. If you have kids, take your cue from them – they often have the best ideas. The simple act of looking for appropriate crafting utensils in itself is already lots of fun for the entire family. Off to the forest or park we go!
Tip 4: Animal magic to make it through autumn
Our animal friends often have particular needs in autumn. You can hang up nesting boxes for birds, build hedgehog houses or set up an insect hotel. By doing so, you provide a sheltered spot for the animals to brave the cold autumn months. You actively contribute to the preservation of wildlife and are able to experience nature in your own garden or on your balcony. Make sure that you put up the nest box in a quiet place that is protected from wind and predators. Hedgehogs feel comfortable in a hedgehog house with dry leaves, hay or newspaper. By building an insect hotel in your garden, you create a safe haven for bees, butterflies and other useful insects. It’s made of wood, bamboo or other materials – you fill the individual chambers with cones, straw, reeds or hollow plant stems.
Tip 5: Saving energy is called for
Last but not least, we should also take care of saving energy in our own homes. Switch off the light when you leave a room, use energy-efficient devices. Make sure that your heating is set properly and use the warmth of the autumn sunlight to heat your home naturally. Every little bit you do to save energy is important and helps to protect our planet. Dole pays attention to the resources it uses, too. In high-risk areas, the company is aiming to reduce water consumption on the Dole farms by ten per cent by 2030. The number of farms certified according to the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) is sought to be increased by 50 per cent by 2030.
