When life gives you lemons – simply sour or surprisingly healthy?
Yellow, juicy and verrrry sour. The fresh scent and typical lemon flavour make this citrus fruit a very appealing prospect. Often associated with summer, this little fruit is surprisingly versatile, adding a sparkling freshness to lots of drinks, salads and other dishes – usually in the form of lemon juice. Lemon water is also currently very popular as a pick-me-up and a vitamin-rich boost for the immune system. But are lemons only a delicious-tasting fruit or are they actually healthy? We find out!
A vitamin-packed powerhouse
Lemons grow on lemon trees, which can live for up to 100 years. While the fruit originated in Asia, lemons are now cultivated in many warm regions throughout the world, particularly in sunny Italy and Spain. Good to know: the fruit is ripe when its skin is bright yellow and it feels heavy relative to its size. Lemons will keep for up to two weeks in a container in the refrigerator.
And what do they contain? With their juicy, very sour flesh, lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C and therefore very healthy: 100 g of this sour tropical fruit contains around 53 mg vitamin C. So one lemon could provide you with half your daily requirement of vitamin C! We need vitamin C to build collagen, synthesise carnitine and produce hormones. This important vitamin also helps us to absorb iron from our food. So if you are eating food that is rich in iron, such as rolled oats, lentils, pulses or lamb’s lettuce, why not drink a glass of lemon water with it. This refreshing drink also stimulates the digestive system and is considered to be a secret tip for a good acid–base balance. Vitamin C also strengthens the immune system and helps wounds to heal.
But there is even more to this tropical fruit! Lemons also provide us with calcium, potassium and magnesium. This lemony kick benefits nerves, heart and muscles. It’s a smart little helper: the phytochemicals in healthy lemons fight free radicals, thus protecting cells.
Enjoy the sour taste – it’s good for you
The sour taste of lemon will revive you. If you are a fan of this little yellow fruit, you are really doing something good for your health. Reap the full benefits by adding lemon juice to your dressings and marinades; it is the perfect finishing touch for your salads. Homemade lemon soda, smoothies with a dash of lemon and lemon water are refreshing treats all year round. Grate some unwaxed lemon peel and use to season sauces and many other dishes. Fruit tarts and cakes and jams also taste delicious with a dash of lemon.
Bring on the lemons!
