Elderberries – multifaceted power fruits
Autumn is here and with it, the elderberries in all their glory. These little power fruits have so much to offer that they definitely deserve to be allotted a slot on your menu. And did you know that elderberries are not only healthy, but also keep insects at bay, lend colour to food and even protect your skin? Let’s delve into the multifaceted world of elderberries!
Full fruit load for your health
The composition rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants makes the small fruits true super berries. Vitamin C, in particular, promotes the production of antibodies and supports the immune system. Antioxidants help combat the free radicals in the body that can cause cell damage. These antioxidants also reduce blood pressure and are able to reduce the risk of heart disease. What’s more, the berries can encourage blood circulation and improve arterial elasticity. The berries’ fibre is good for your intestines and digestion. Try elderberries as an ingredient in smoothies, salads or as the foundation for tasty jams and syrups – the possibilities abound!
Natural insect repellent
But did you know that elderberries also act as superweapons against insects? The berries’ scent has an off-putting effect on mosquitos, flies and other undesired visitors. It’s estimated that the insects experience the scent of the fruits as unpleasant or even threatening. This is most likely due to the chemical components, such as specific essential oils or flavonoids in the elderberries. Instead of grappling with the side effects of insect sprays, you can simply place a couple of elderberries close by, whether on the balcony, in the garden or even in proximity to open windows to make sure that the pesky creatures “buzz off” naturally on their own accord.
Juicy colour booster
Elderberries can also naturally colour your food. From deep violet to bright red – elderberries offer a broad range of colouring options. You can use them to add colour to yoghurts, ice cream, smoothies or pastries – in doing so, ensuring a treat not just in terms of flavour, but also appearance. Here’s how it works: pick or buy fresh elderberries. Make sure you choose ripe berries, as they have the best pigment content. Wash the berries, place them in a pot and cover with water. Allow the water to simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes, then leave to cool. Crush the elderberries with a hand blender or spoon to release the juice. Pour the juice through a sieve. Use the juice directly to colour your food of choice.
Beauty secret with vitamin kick
Elderberries have also found their place in skincare. The oil extracted from the berries contains valuable ingredients that can regenerate and nourish the skin. Massage a few drops of elderberry oil into your skin and feel how smooth and soft it feels. What lies behind this? Elderberries are rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and E as well as flavonoids. These counteract premature skin ageing. The fruits also contain certain compounds that can help to reduce inflammation of the skin and to diminish red patches. Elderberries can also play a part in moisturising the skin, soothing it and improving its elasticity.
