Freshly squeezed, as a fruity ingredient in a salad or as a topping for porridge – oranges guarantee sparkling variety for fruit fans. But how healthy are they really? And is it worth regularly eating oranges during the winter? We have taken a closer look at this popular citrus fruit for you. Today we reveal the secret of oranges!

What exactly are oranges?

The orange is the fruit of an evergreen plant (Citrus sinensis) originating from Southeast Asia. Surprisingly, oranges were used in China as early as the 2nd century BC. However, they only arrived in Europe much later. It is believed that seafarers brought them from India to Portugal in the middle of the 16th century. Today, oranges are cultivated in all warm regions throughout the world. These include Mediterranean countries, the USA, Brazil, South Africa and China. Oranges come in both sweet and sour varieties. The juicy flesh of the orange, which is divided into segments, is hidden beneath a thick, bitter skin. And because oranges are so deliciously succulent, they make popular juices. Valencia, one of the sweet varieties, is particularly suitable for juicing. A refreshing thirst quencher!

Tip: When buying oranges, choose firm, well-shaped fruit that are heavy and have a smooth skin.

What do we know about oranges?

It is not only the fruity taste of the orange that is so appealing, its healthy constituents are also clear to see. Its high vitamin C content in particular makes the orange so nutritious. This vitamin is incredibly good for our immune system. Fresh oranges should therefore always be included in the fruit bowl, especially during the winter. Vitamin C also helps the body to absorb any iron in our food. Tip: Drink a glass of orange juice with your meal.

This delicious fruit is also an impressive source of polyphenols. The phytochemicals in the orange have an anti-inflammatory effect and help to fight free radicals. Perfect cell protection. Vitamin B in the orange can even lead to better balance. The magnesium is good for bones and teeth. Want to use the orange peel too? Simply place it on a radiator and enjoy the natural scent that it emits – it is sure to lift your mood.
